Growth, energy, innovation and an attractive environment to live in – Germany’s capital city offers businesses and their employees many advantages. With these benefits, it’s no wonder that so many globally active companies – such as Siemens, Bayer Schering Pharma and Sony – have decided to set up offices in Berlin.

Berlin identifies itself as a laboratory for discovering new ideas. Moreover, its political leaders are determined to make sure that research activities related to the technologies of the future are expanded here even further. Berlin is particularly placing its bets on new and expanding technological fields. Key sectors include: biotechnology, IT and communications technology/media, medical engineering, optical technologies and transport technology.

Support and Advancement

Berlin’s policies support the transfer of technology and even closer connections between industry and science. For example, the city’s “Zukunftsfonds Berlin” funding initiative helps promote innovative projects, and particular preference in the selection process is given to those proposals that combine both research- and business-related aspects. Furthermore, science and technology parks (e.g., the Adlershof Science and Technology Park or the BiotechPark Berlin-Buch) provide favorable start-up conditions for young companies and foster the transfer of knowledge to businesses.

In addition to being home to both the executive and legislative branches of Germany’s federal government, Berlin also plays host to the headquarters of numerous leading business- and science-related associations. Being close to federal institutions, foreign embassies and the representative offices of Germany’s 15 other federal states provides unbeatable conditions for conducting R&D, manufacturing and marketing. Moreover, the capital region is also a hub between the markets of Western and Eastern Europe. Indeed, in many ways, Berlin is the crossroads of Europe.

A Highly Qualified Workforce

With its six million inhabitants, the capital region is Germany’s second-largest conurbation. Likewise, with its 3.4 million inhabitants, Berlin is the country’s largest city. Forty percent of the city’s population is younger than 35 years, and people from 186 countries call Berlin home. There city offers highly trained potential employees for all sectors. Each year, Berlin’s universities graduate 20,000 people who are well-trained to be the professionals and managers of tomorrow.

A Wide Array of Attractive Potential Partners

Berlin is home to both large, globally active corporations and a wide range of innovative small and medium-sized companies. But whether they are small, large or somewhere in between, these companies are used to collaborating with each other and taking advantage of the benefits that proximity can provide in terms of communicating and doing business.
