Energy and the Environment

The research capacity in the field of energy is enormous: In Berlin, 500 experts are involved in conducting research on a broad spectrum of energy-related issues. The largest establishments dedicated to focusing on energy-related issues in research and teaching are the Technische Universität Berlin (TU), the Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW) and the Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin.

Graduates with Specialized Training

Many of Berlin’s engineering graduates have specialized in energy technology – a decisive location advantage for the city. There are currently more than 350 firms in Berlin, with a total of 29,000 employees, active in the energy sector.

Berlin has made a name for itself internationally, especially in the fields of turbomachinery and photovoltaics. Particularly promising is the research, education and manufacturing conducted in the field of thin-film photovoltaics.

The main areas of activity in the energy-technology field are:

• Second-generation biofuels
• Photovoltaics
• Electrical transmission and distribution networks, virtual power plants, energy-mix management
• Energy-efficient technologies, projects and consulting
• Renewable energies

Research on behalf of the climate

Climate research is another important topic – not only in Berlin – but also in Brandenburg. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, for example, conducts excellent research to protect the climate and works closely with Berlin’s universities. In particular, the Technische Universität has great expertise in this area and is part of the EU-backed international network “Climate Change – Migration and Adaption.”
