Mathematics

To Content

As a basic science, mathematics is essential for innovations. It also allows many products and services to become possible. In Berlin, the German Research Foundation’s MATHEON research center, which is supported by the Excellence Initiative, brings scientific research and industry together.

The “MATHEON – Mathematics for key technologies” initiative of the German Research Foundation (DFG) is jointly run by:

  • Freie Universität Berlin
  • Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
  • Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB)
  • Technische Universität Berlin
  • Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS)

Foundation for Key Technologies

MATHEON brings together roughly 200 scientists, who conduct basic research in close collaboration with partners drawn from industry and business. Their research focuses on the mathematical foundations of the following fields:

  • Finance
  • Life sciences
  • Logistics, traffic and telecommunication networks
  • Production
  • Electronic and photonic devices
  • Visualization

Another part of the Excellence Initiative is the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS), a joint graduate school of the mathematics institutes of Berlin’s three universities. It offers students a challenging program, from the Bachelors degree to the doctorate degree level.
